Best research article in Science: discovery with the participation of Czech scientists

The international team, which also includes Czech researchers from České Budějovice and Třeboň, received the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for the best research article or report published in the scientific journal Science in 2021.

This year, AAAS is presenting the prize to the paper entitled “Hunting the eagle killer: A cyanobacterial neurotoxin causes vacuolar myelinopathy,” first published March 26th, 2021.

The paper was the product of an international collaboration across government agencies, academic institutions, and the biotechnology sector to bring together over 20 years of research insights. The team was co-led by Susan Wilde, associate professor of aquatic science at the University of Georgia and Timo Niedermeyer, professor of pharmacognosy at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany. Czech Scientists from the Czech Academy of Sciences, Jan Mareš at the Biology Centre and Pavel Hrouzek at the Institute of Microbiology participated in the study.

The awarded research highlights the emerging issues posed by toxic cyanobacteria in habitats beyond lakes and reservoirs, in particular their deadly impacts on bald eagles and other birds in the southeastern United States.

Jan Mares at the Biology Centre led the genome sequencing of Aetokthonos hydrillicola, the novel cyanobacterium, that produced a toxin responsible for the eagle deaths.

The Newcomb Cleveland Prize is the AAAS’s oldest award dating back to 1923. It is presented annually to the author(s) of the best research article or report published in Science each year. Winning research is selected based on the quality of the scholarship, innovation, and presentation; the likelihood of influencing its field; and wider interdisciplinary significance.
