City Nature Challenge České Budějovice

City Nature Challenge České Budějovice
Place: České Budějovice and surroundings
Date: 29.04.2022 - 01.05.2022 23:59

The city of České Budějovice will, for the first time, join the worldwide City Nature Challenge project. In this friendly competitive challenge, cities contest for as many observations of natural diversity as possible. Anyone can get involved; all you have to do is take pictures of the local wildlife from April 29 to May 2, 2022. In České Budějovice, City Nature Challenge is organized by the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences under the auspices of the Statutory City of České Budějovice.

The CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people in the event. Started in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities.

In 2021, 419 cities from 44 countries joined the challenge, and during the four-day bioblitz, over 53,000 people observed more than 1.2 million organisms. In 2022, more than 500 cities are about to involve and České Budějovice will be one of them. In the Czech Republic, Prague, Brno and Uherské Hradiště take part in CNC project.

City Nature Challenge will start on April 29, 2022 and will last for four days until May 2. Getting involved is very easy. Find wildlife in České Budějovice, take pictures of anything that grows or lives and share it through iNaturalist. Anyone can do it without the slightest scientific education - the application itself recognizes what kind of animal, plant or fungus it is.

We believe that the event will succeed in České Budějovice and that observers, whether individuals, families, school classes or hobby groups, will enjoy it.
