Modelling of freshwater fisheries

On September 21 - 23, 2016, participants from 7 European countries met in the Institute of Hydrobiology, Biology Centre CAS in České Budějovice to discuss further progress in modelling the changes of fish ecology and fisheries connected with Climatic change.

A workshop of Climefish freshwater sector

The workshop topics were:

Climate scenarios and limnological models – converting of climate model scenarios (available global and regional projections) into water temperature and other relevant limnological changes via limnological models.

Brief Case studies presentations and review of progress

Structured models of fish populations – presentation and discussion of modelling approaches to structured population dynamics; identification of key demographic and interaction processes that are affected by climate change.

Ecosystem models -brief discussion of available and/or envisioned food web/community models and approaches to address climate warming impact on lakes. Brief demonstrations of available modelling tools.

Model implementation pilot runs and discussion - discussion of suitable functional forms of key processes to be implemented in the model assumptions; parameterization and outputs relevant to our Project; demonstration of pilot runs using the available IBM model; discussion on parameterizations for species relevant to other Climefish CS.

The workshop outlined the main needs for reliable modelling of the climate issues and the most promising modelling approaches. It summarized the immediate needs before the next workshop to be held in Hungary, in 2017.
