Cell biologist Hassan Hashimi receives Professorial Decree
On 1 June 2026, the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, appointed Assoc. Prof. Hassan Hashimi, Ph.D., Professor in the field of Molecular and Cell Biology and Genetics. The ceremonial presentation of professorial decrees took place in the Great Hall of the Karolinum in Prague, attended by the President of the Republic and the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Robert Plaga. In total, 93 new professors from Czech universities and research institutions received the title.
Professor Hassan Hashimi works at the Institute of Parasitology of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he has long focused on the study of mitochondria – the cellular organelles responsible for energy production. Through research on parasitic protozoa, he investigates how mitochondria evolved, how they maintain their intricate internal architecture, and which molecular mechanisms govern their function. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the organization of eukaryotic cells.
The proposal for his appointment was submitted by the Scientific Council of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, where Professor Hashimi also holds an academic position.
Appointment to a professorship represents recognition of many years of scientific, educational, and professional achievement. It also acknowledges Professor Hashimi’s significant contributions to the advancement of molecular and cell biology and genetics, as well as to the education and mentoring of future generations of scientists.
We warmly congratulate Professor Hassan Hashimi on this distinguished achievement and wish him continued success in his scientific and academic career.
