The article by the scientists of the Institute of Entomology was featured in the December issue of BioOne Vista

Among the 24 articles in the summary of the most interesting scientific publications of the December issue of BioOne Vista is the work of the author team from the Institute of Entomology of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Their study deals with new isolates of various species of entomopathogenic fungi and their effectiveness against the bulg mite (Rhizoglyphus robini), which is a serious pest of garlic, onions and other crops.

BioOne Vista is a monthly collection of recently published articles highlighting subjects and themes in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. The December 2022 issue of BioOne VISTA featured research in the field of mycology. BioOne Complete’s aggregation of over 200 journals includes thousands of articles supporting studies in fungal biology we are pleased that among the 24 selected articles is the article Efficacy of soil isolates of entomopathogenic fungi against the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae) published in the journal Systematic and Applied Acarology.

Bulb mites are serious pests of garlic, onions and other crops. They are usually found in soil in association with dangerous fungal pathogens such as Fusarium spp. Until now, the regulation of these pests has mainly relied on the use of synthetic acaricides, but chemical pest control runs into the problem of pest resistance and requirements to reduce the soil application of pesticides because of environmental issues. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative methods of plant protection, e.g. using natural enemies of the pest. The aim of the above study was to obtain new isolates of different species of entomopathogenic fungi and to assess their effectiveness against bulb mite adults. Metarhizium anisopliae strains isolated from soil samples collected in the Czech Republic and Metarhizium indigoticum strain from Israel proved to be the best, causing up to 99% mortality within four days. This publication was created as part of an international project financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space of the State of Israel.
