Julius Lukeš Welcomed as a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences

At the end of April, parasitologist Julius Lukeš from the Institute of Parasitology at the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences was formally welcomed as a new member of the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., as part of the 162nd Annual Meeting of the NAS, held from April 25 to 27, 2025.

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences is one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions. This independent, non-governmental organization was founded in 1863 and brings together leading scientists, serving as an advisory body to the U.S. government on matters of science and technology. The exceptional prestige of the NAS is underscored by the fact that among its current and former members are approximately 500 Nobel laureates. Membership in the Academy is for life, and new members are elected based on outstanding scientific achievements. As of now, the NAS has 2,617 active members and 537 international members. International members are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States.

Julius Lukeš was elected to the NAS in May 2024 as an international member. He is the only living scientist from the Czech Republic to hold membership in this institution. He will serve in the section focused on pathogenic organisms and evolutionary biology.

We previously reported on his election: Julius Lukeš elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
